When You Should See a Lactation Consultant

Every breastfeeding journey is unique, and it's normal to have questions or encounter breastfeeding challenges along the way. If you're experiencing nipple pain, latching difficulties, concerns about milk supply, or simply want guidance on creating a personalized feeding plan, our lactation consultants are here for you. They can also address questions about bottle-feeding and provide support for any feeding concerns you may have. Our team is dedicated to helping you achieve your breastfeeding or feeding goals with confidence! You should seek lactation support when:

  • You and/or your baby are having any feeding challenges.
  • Your breasts or nipples hurt or you have an infection (Mastitis).
  • Your baby is not gaining weight.
  • You are worried about how your baby acts during or after feeding.
  • You are worried that you might have too much milk or a low milk supply.
  • Your baby is refusing the breast or refusing the bottle with breast milk.
  • You are concerned your child isn’t latching properly.
  • You have any questions about supplemental formula nutrition.
  • You are concerned about the structure of your baby’s mouth and ability to nurse.
  • Your doctor or your baby’s doctor sends you for help.

What to Expect

During your lactation consultation, a friendly and experienced lactation consultant will listen attentively to your concerns and goals. They'll perform a feeding assessment, observing your baby's latch and suck technique. Together, you'll discuss personalized strategies to address any challenges and ensure a comfortable and successful feeding experience for both you and your baby. Our lactation consultants can also provide helpful tips on positioning, milk production, and troubleshooting common breastfeeding issues. This personalized lactation support empowers you to confidently navigate your breastfeeding journey or establish a satisfying bottle-feeding routine. During lactation support, our consultants may:

  • Watch your baby breastfeed and offer help with positioning and technique if needed.
  • Show you how to tell when your baby is latched and feeding well.
  • Put a finger in your baby’s mouth to check your baby’s suck and mouth structures.
  • Weigh your baby before and after breastfeeding.
  • Help you with breast pumping.
  • Offer written instructions and support numbers to call when you need help.
  • To prep for your appointment, dress comfortably and come as you are—pajamas and all—bringing your feeding pillow or comfy blanket. If you have questions about your bottles, nipple shields or breast pump, please bring them in as well.
